It is official: the negotiating team has signed a tentative agreement on
an EMU-AAUP – EMU contract that expires on August 31, 2010. A lot of
hard work and effort has paid off, as I hope and believe that this is a
contract you can be proud of.
Today, we worked very hard to secure language that creates a committee
that will examine the issue of preserving domestic partner benefits; we
believe the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that we signed will
achieve this goal. All faculty who currently have domestic partner
benefits will retain them through December 31, 2007; we hope that they
can be preserved after that time.
The administration did not display the commitment to these benefits that
we believe is warranted; we hope that through the work of the committee,
we can persuade the administration to realize how critical these
benefits are to our entire university community.
Overall, the compensation and other gains we achieved through the fact
finding process were significant, and there are a large number of people
to thank. For now, I want to thank you, our faculty colleagues, for
your unending support throughout this process. It is due to your
steadfast support and solidarity that we were able to achieve what we have.
Here are the next steps:
• The Executive Committee of the AAUP will meet tomorrow and vote on
whether to approve the tentative agreement
• The Bargaining Council will meet this Friday, April 13th, and vote on
whether to approve the tentative agreement
• If both of those bodies approve the tentative agreement, then the AAUP
will provide the agreement for your perusal for a 7-day period, starting
April 13th and ending April 20th. The agreement will be made available
online and at the AAUP office.
• On Wednesday, April 18th at 2:30, there will be a full faculty
meeting, where we will explain all of the details of the agreement,
including those provisions agreed to over the past summer.
• On Friday, April 20th, from 1PM to 7PM, you will be able to vote on
whether to ratify the contract or not. This vote will take place in the
Halle Library Auditorium.
