Bargaining Update 8/19/22

Dear Colleagues,

The EMU-AAUP Negotiating Team expects to bargain through the MERC mediator every day next week because we are committed to negotiating in good faith a fair and equitable contract for faculty. Between exorbitant increases to healthcare costs and low annual raises, EMU has essentially proposed to cut faculty salaries. They have also rejected proposals that advance the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, that improve workload, and that would assure shared governance. They even rejected a proposal that we believe would improve student retention and would result in more summer classes running! We are not just fighting for ourselves in these negotiations, we are fighting for a better university and a better educational experience for our students.

Next Friday, August 26, is student move-in day, and we will hold an informational picket starting at 10am outside of Best Hall and Sellers Hall. Given the current state of negotiations, it is extremely important that the administration understand that its positions are detrimental to the university, the faculty, and the students. We strongly encourage you to come to the informational picket on August 26th to demonstrate your support for fair salaries, equitable treatment, improved working conditions, and a better educational experience for our students.

August 29 is the first day of classes for the fall semester, and our collective bargaining agreement expires on August 31. Next Friday we must tell the administration in no uncertain terms that we want a fair contract to start the semester on time.
